A friend of mine is the creater of Merida and the movie "Brave". She created Merida to be a REAL girl...she has freckles and unruly red hair and fights with her mom and does all the other stuff regular girls do. She is her own hero! She didn't wait for some prince to come along and save her, oh no! She has a heavy Scottish accent and prefers nothing more than getting out, riding her horse, and yes-even learning archery!
So, Disney has decided to add her to their "Disney Princesses" collection. Oh, but unfortunately she just wasn't as pretty as Cinderella and Snow White and all of the others. My goodness...she even had a few extra pounds on her! How horrific!! So, in their infinite wisdom Disney has made some "adjustments" to her. Yep! Her hair is so beautifully in control and lustrous. She has lost a few pounds and gotten a bit taller it seems. Oopsie! Her gown has a lower cut in front for a bit of CLEAVAGE! She now has uptilted eyes and is wearing makeup. How else could she be a "Princess" if she wasn't perfect?
WHAT IS THIS TEACHING OUR CHILDREN? Do you want your children to believe that only "perfection" or someone else's version of it is acceptable? I sure as hell don't.
